Thursday Night in Bangkok - Club Calypso

When we left Wat Po it was pushing 3:30 in the afternoon. Most temples close at 4:00 to allow for evening services of the Monks, and we were tired – after all, we’d been up and about since just after 3:00 a.m. and jet lag is still a consideration.

We took a cab (thankfully, the longtail boat was behind us!) back to our hotel for a nap and a shower before dinner.

Rush hour in Bangkok is a lot like it is in NYC – or Charlotte, or Oklahoma City, or DC. It starts about 3:00 in the afternoon.

Lots of waiting for your turn. After a while, we realized we were just a couple of blocks from the hotel and it was easier and faster to walk.

Sam, being young enough to eat what he wants when he wants and genetically blessed with the metabolism of a wolverine, went off to get a sandwich and do some personal errands while we crashed.

After dinner, we took the Sky Train across town to a high rise hotel to see the Calypso Cabaret, a world famous show of transgendered performers.

Yup, these guys have had their equipment altered – something which is apparently quite affordable here, but that’s another story. If you met them on the street, for the most part you wouldn’t know that they didn’t come into the world as women.

Lest you think this was some aberration, the show was probably 95% sold out. There were tour groups from all over the world, including what strongly appeared to be a ladies senior Sunday School Class. It was like going to any other theater performance.

The room was set up much as you envision a 1950’s nightclub, with small tables and chairs in rows grouped loosely around them. The show was spectacular, a general review (in multiple languages) of songs from a variety of things over time.

Unfortunately, we were toward the back and they moved very fast so a lot of our pictures didn’t turn out. That was one experience, though, that neither the photos or the words truly capture.

You just had to be there.

Although it was only 9:30ish, we were tuckered out and opted to go back and crash. After all, tomorrow’s another day and we have lots more to see.
