Chiang Mai

This is probably a good time for a little geography lesson. Until we got here, we had no clue about the Thai countryside. We’ve got a better grasp of it, now.

Everything in Bangkok is tied up in traffic. It’s like any other big city with roads, except people are driving on the left very, very fast, with motorcycles zooming around you.

Chiang Mai is where people go to get away from Bangkok and relax.  It is the mountain retreat you save up for.

It is to the north in the mountains, a very short plane ride away – about an hour. Our hotel was a 30 minute drive from the airport (at that hour of the morning), we checked in at Bangkok Airlines (a new one for us) and were directed to our gate. On the way there the most exciting thing that happened was that Larry’s paper cup of coffee (from Dunkin’ Donuts, no less) had a hole in the bottom so it kept making a mess on the table.

Bangkok airlines bills themselves as a "boutique airline", and pride themselves on their service.  They have reason to be proud, as it was an extremely pleasant ride.

The flight attendants came through shortly after takeoff with a complimentary drink service and “breakfast” – a prepackaged tray with a croissant and a little cup of yogurt.

Hey, it's more than US Airways is offering any more.  It was actually pretty good.
During the flight, an overhead entertainment system played the international version of “America’s Funniest Home Videos”, which didn’t need headphones for comprehension.

Somehow, a ball to the crotch is universally funny. It must be ingrained in our DNA somewhere.

We won the luggage lottery – one of our bags was first off. The ride was waiting and 20 minutes later we were in our hotel.
