New Suits

Friday morning we decided to do something we’d heard about but had not previously ever done. We went to a tailor to have suits custom made.

Years ago, sitcoms used to always talk about ordering cheap suits when you went to Hong Kong. A bit of internet research told us that you didn’t necessarily get cheap suits, but you could get nice ones custom made much cheaper than in the US.

Of course, selecting anything on the internet is something of a “pig in a poke”, but we’d made arrangements to meet with one place. They were even going to send a car to pick us up and bring us to their shop.

Sam recommended another shop. Since it was time to leave to meet with the first one, he offered to call and check it out for us.

This is the disadvantage of not speaking the local language. You can read a lot in facial expression, though, and we kinda figured something was going on.

Sam generally didn’t have good things to say about the shop we’d contacted, so relying on him we canceled the appointment and went to the one he recommended.

We were given a large number of books to thumb through to select the style of suit we wanted.  Then we picked the fabric.  Then came the measurement part of the ordeal.  It was done right there in the open...with the tailor calling our the measurements to someone who wrote it all down.  Thank god it was in Thai....so we didn't have to hear the actual numbers.

The long and short of it is that we still got measured for suits, the prices quoted are fair and within the range that we wanted.

We were instructed to return on Sunday morning at 10:00 am for a final fitting.  The suits will be delivered to our hotel on Monday.
