Dinner in Chiang Mai

We met our guide, Tuu, at 8:00 sharp and went to dinner at a restaurant called Antique House. It’s an authentic, 120 year old Teak wood house that’s been converted.

Like in the US, once you make the list of historic places, you need to convert to a restaurant / antique store / etc. They did all of the above.

Northern Thai food is as different from southern Thai food as Boston is from Atlanta. It’s all very good, but it is different. We had “sticky rice,” which is aptly named. It comes with your dinner in a plastic bag that’s inside a little woven bamboo jewelry box. Apparently it’s popular because it’s a rice you can eat with your fingers.

We’ve learned to order a “set dinner for 2”. Essentially, you pick how hot you want it and what kind of meat / vegetable you want in the main dish, and you’ll get 3 or 4 dishes that compliment each other --- along with rice.

We still continue to be amazed at the prices. Dinner, including a beer (they’re big, so you tend to split them like a Miller 40 oz) was 650 Baht – that’s $19.89 US, and there’s enough leftover for lunch the next day if we had a way to deal with that.
