There is a bar in our hotel – and possibly a restaurant, although we haven’t seen that yet – and it’s fairly popular with American tourists, so striking up a conversation and getting recommendations on where to go for dinner isn’t difficult.
After a few line drawings on convenient scratch pads (napkins having a tendency to get soggy, after all) and references to the street map the hotel provided, we were off in search of food.
At first, it feels a lot like NYC here -- at Christmas. And we were told this was a slow night in the city since it's in the middle of the week.
The sidewalks are both crowded and broken – I suspect there’s never a time when there aren’t any people on them to make repairs!
Crossing the street is a trip. Crosswalks are apparently unknown, and one guy told us that you just look at the car, bow your head to them and walk. After seeing how it’s done, I realize that you bow your head because you’re praying that you will make it across the street in one piece.
